Chambolle Musigny 1996
 Domaine Michel
 Noëllat et Fils

The village quality wine we selected for this month's tasting case is a treasure from the small but renowned village of Chambolle Musigny (total area under production is only 385 acres!). This wine from Domaine Michel Noëllat gives the delicate character we look for in this village, and, with a powerful vintage like 1996, it can be aged for 3 to 7 years or opened now for appreciate fruit.

One of the wonderful aspects of Chambolle wines is their flattering aromas - violet and other floral aromas as well as red berries. The terroir of Chambolle gives great concentrated wines that maintain their elegance - almost a complete contradiction.

Due to the beautiful grace of this wine, we suggest you avoid pairing it with overly powerful or spicy foods. A plain steak without complex sauce or simply enjoy this wine during a cocktail, without food.

The winery Domaine Michel Noëllat began in the second half of the 19th century and is today one of the oldest wineries in the village of Vosne-Romanée. They own/manage about 50 acres of which 3.7 acres are 40-year old Chambolle Musigny vines. (The winery owns vines and cares for other vines belonging to family members who are not in the wine business. The current directors are Alain and Jean Marc Noëllat who have been running things since their father passed away in 1989. Alain feels the 1996 vintage is a great year, full of structure, great tannins and can be aged at least 7 to 10 years.

The wines are aged in approximately 30% new oak until the malolactic fermentation is finished and after that second fermentation the wine is transferred to 3 to 4 year old barrels in order to maintain the elegant characteristics of the terroir.
