Charmes Chambertin,
 Grand Cru 1997
 Moillard-Grivot

This grand cru comes from one of the most famous stretches of land in Burgundy - just south of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, before Morey-Saint-Denis. This is one of the 9 Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. It is difficult for us to say that this wine should be aged because we love it so much right now, but those with patience will be rewarded. This wine can keep 5 to 15 years.

The maker, Moillard Grivot, began their activity in 1850 in the town of Nuits St Georges. They own many fields around Burgundy (approx. 185 acres - huge for the region) in addition to their activity of négociant, which means they purchase grapes from other vineyard owners. This is a common practice in Burgundy because there is so little quality land as well as the fact that no one is selling the land they own. Moillard-Grivot has had a contract with the same owner of Charmes Chambertin for the last 8 years. Each year they produce about 6 barrels (1,800 bottles).

The ?nologue or cellar master of Moillard-Grivot, Mr. Gerard Sauvaget, reflects the conventional wisdom in Burgundy concerning the 1997 vintage - very flattering wines that are pleasant now and will keep through the middle term, but should not be hidden in the back of your cellar. They will be better to drink sooner rather than later.

Laurent prefers a nice grilled porterhouse steak, duck with a sweet sauce, roast veal (not stewed) - something delicate and not too gamy - to accompany this Charmes Chambertin.
