Clos de Tart Grand Cru 1998
																Mommessin

We would like to start with a warm thank you to Mr. Sylvain Pitiot, the director of Domaine du Clos de Tart. After much discussion, we are more than happy to announce the arrival of Clos de Tart to Burgundy Online. This winery is one of the most exclusive in the Côte de Nuits. They are located in Morey Saint Denis and own close to 19 acres in only one field, the Grand Cru Clos de Tart - and they are monopoly owners. In addition, the arrival of Mr. Pitiot in 1995 changed the course of the wine-making in a very positive way. Radical changes were made and as the wines improved word got out and their reputation grew. So, although quantities are limited and prices are not the lowest, we are very proud to be able to bring you this wine. This winery is widely considered one of the top starts, not only in the Côte de Nuits, but in all of Burgundy - particularly for their 1998 vintage.

The vineyard maintenance is traditional and virtually organic (treatments against mildew remain necessary). Vines are an average of 50 years old therefore producing wonderfully concentrated grapes and keeping yields low. Clos de Tart always has very ripe grapes due to the planting of their vines north/south (across the slope) compared to east/west (up and down the slope) for most other fields on the hillsides of Burgundy. The average owner with vines planted east/west can use the traditional vineyard tractor and not tip over - very practical! But the Clos de Tart can plant across the slope and use a specially designed tractor with a hydraulic feature to compensate in an uneven situation. This unique planting gives them sunlight on one side of the vines in the morning and the opposite side in the afternoon and very high maturity levels come harvest time. The harvest brought back to the winery is 90% de-stemmed and macerates in a modern facility, allowing for close monitoring and control. The maceration lasts 3 weeks and then the wine is pressed and aged in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months. Fining and filtration are not necessary for this elegant wine. The annual production is about 20,000 bottles and 60% of their wine is exported to 75 different countries.
