| We have taken the opportunity of the January 2001 Saint Vincent Festival in Meursault to bring you a very interesting range of Meursault wines. We cross different fields, different vintages (1999 and 2000), and, of course, different producers. Meursault is one of the top villages on Burgundy's "A List". Thomas Jefferson wrote to one of his suppliers in 1789: "I have an urgent need for Meursault (...) That's the one I like the most!". In addition to its worldwide recognition, it also has a large production so it easier to find than some of its smaller neighbors. The following average annual production is a fine example: It must be noted that there are no Grands Crus in Meursault. But it is usually tops on the list in the continuing Burgundian discussion "If they were to revise the appellation ratings and change some 1er Crus to grands crus..." We are pleased to present the following selection of Meursault wines: As usual, you can find out more about each of these wines by clicking on the item above or on Current Tasting Case below. If you would like to put together your own mixture or blend in some of our previous offerings please click on Wine List. The origin of the Saint Vincent festival can be found in the mutual aid associations of the small vineyard villages of Burgundy. When a member could not tend to their vines, all other winemakers in the village would do the work for them. The symbol of these associations is Saint Vincent, the patron saint of winemakers. Each village has its own Saint Vincent statue and a different winemaking family keeps the statue for one year. The winemakers of the village would come together on Saint Vincent's feast day in January each year to pass the statue on to the next family. |

In 1938 the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Tastevin (Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin) decided to bring together the villages to celebrate the festival on a regional level. The first celebration took place in Chambolle-Musigny followed by Vosne-Romanée in 1939. The next Saint Vincent festival had to wait until 1947 due to the war, but since then a different village has hosted the festivities each year. The much sought after year 2000 location was Gevrey-Chambertin and the first Saint Vincent festival of the new millenium was held this year in Meursault one of Burgundy’s most prominent white wine ambassadors.![]() A parade took place on Saturday morning where each of the 80 Burgundy wine villages presented their own Saint Vincent statue which was carried by 2 of their winemaking families. Then a mass took place at the village church. |

With these formalities taken care of, the 22 different cellars opened to the general public at 11 am and remained open the rest of the day Saturday and all day Sunday. The official Meursault St. Vincent 2001 glass was the entry ticket which allowed visitors to taste 3 different vintages of Meursault; 1996, 1997 and 1999. The wine was donated by Meursault winemakers and blended into 3 different bottlings based on vintage. With the estimated 60,000 visitors over the 2 day festival, all 28,000 bottles of the special Meursault wine were drunk or sold and 170,000 glasses were sold. As you can see by the following photos, decorating the village is very important: 6,500 paper flowers were placed throughout the village by 300 volunteers before the weekend and 1,100 people volunteered their time each day of the festival.
