As you may know, our touring and wine shipping activities are based in Nuits Saint Georges and this is also the town we are proud to call “home”. First, because of the small-town feel (5,500 residents) but second, and perhaps more important, the great variety of high-quality, reasonably-priced premier cru wines found here. There are a total of 40 different premier crus here. The 11 premier crus to the north of Nuits tend to be more tender and delicate, like their legendary neighbor, Vosne-Romanée. The 29 premier crus to the south, on the Premeaux-Prissey side, tend to be built for ageing: solid and muscular with strong character.

The number of premier crus is often the subject of discussion amongst wine lovers. Why are there so many premier crus and no grand crus in Nuits St Georges? Through the classifications of the 1850s and the 1930s the top Nuits have remained premier crus while many feel that several have proven the grand cru status and should receive that rating. The reason has been, and remains today, a question of “why fix something if its not broken” and “why change something when you risk to pay more taxes”! The wines of Nuits sell very well around the world and many growers feel a change in the appellation of their wines would complicate their lives in many ways.

Approximately 99.9 % of all wines produced here are red pinot noir, with the ever-so-occasional white wine. The main characteristic of Nuits Saint Georges wines is their robust structure. They tend to be strong and ageable thanks to a tannic structure that helps them stand the test of time.

Today Nuits Saint Georges wine-makers are making great improvements in the quality and dependability of their wines. The latest generation of producers here is more open to the outside then their predecessors. This means not only more positive interaction with clients from around the world, but also their great interest for the latest wine-making techniques from the farest reaches of the wine world. They are quick to investigate, study and pick-and-choose the innovations coming from California, Australia, South Africa and others.

The Château Gris, shown here in the 1800s and today, was built in 1815 by Zéphir de Mayol de Lupé to give “busy-work” to some poor people in Nuits St Georges. The name of the Château comes from the gray tiles used on the roof. It is actually very small and no one has ever lived there.
