![]() François Buisson-Battault follows a traditional Burgundian philosophy: The grape and terroir make the wine. His job is to help everything come together. He prefers the expression of the chardonnay grapes in his wine. Therefore, he uses little new oak. ![]() Click for larger image The 12-acre parcel of "Goutte d'Or" (Golden drop) has one dominant producer and that is Buisson-Battault. They produce 30% of the wine from this field. Their vines are an average of 40 years old. Their annual production will vary depending on the climatic conditions of that year. For example, in 1998 the production was 6 barrels (due to frost in the spring which limited production) and in 1999 production was 18 barrels (a very abundant year in all of the Côte d'Or). The 1999 harvest was exceptionally clean which gives elegant, refined, delicate characteristics to this wine. ![]() As for all Buisson wines, this is not over-oaked. They use only between 15 and 20% new oak here. "If I smell the oak, that means I used too much", says François Buisson-Battault. This wine has a rich color. The aromas are thick butterscotch with some mineral hints. The acidity level is present which gives a freshness to the nose and a lively taste. The attack is full bodied and rich. This has a reserved quality which demonstrates its age-ability. |
