Case of the Month
Red 2002 Mixed case
We, as well as the winemakers in Burgundy, were pleased with 2002
vintage from the beginning. Right from the harvest all the elements
were present for an excellent vintage. The balance of acidity and
tannins mixed with ripe, rich fruit gave us wines that were pleasant
to taste/drink right from the start. When this happens early the
wines will sometimes close up quickly and open up later to a more
evolved character. But since 02 is a wine for the long term they
have stayed open and should remain so for quite some time.

Gevrey Chambertin veilles vignes, Geantet Pansiot
 |
This winery was founded in 1955 by Edmond Geantet. His
son, Vincent joined him in 1977 and finally took over in 1989.
They own a total of 12 hectares (30 acres) in Gevrey Chambertin,
Brochon, Marsannay and Chambolle Musigny. They treat their
vines with the “lutte raisonné” method
which allows for biochemical intervention only when required,
never for preventative reasons. They remove leaves from the
vines during the summer and green harvest is done if yields
are too high. The harvest is completely by hand and is entirely
sorted. The bunches are completely de-stemmed followed by
a cold fermentation (10 °C) lasting 8 days. Then the fermentation
process begins thanks to natural yeasts and the increased
temperature in the vats (22°C). When the alcoholic fermentation
is finished the wine is pressed in a pneumatic press. Wines
are aged in approximately 30% new oak, 30% oak of 1 wine and
40% oak of 2 wines. Before the malolactic fermentation they
“bâtonner” (stir) wines once a week while
in barrels. Malolactic fermentation happens naturally with
the increased temperatures of the spring. Bottling usually
takes place after 13 months of aging, without racking, fining
or filtering unless necessary.

This wine has a bright color, dark ruby red with black
highlights. The nose is discreet, with aromas of ripe black
berries as well as smoky & spicy hints. The tannins are
quite present and the length is very long. This wine is a
“grand” wine, concentrated and harmonious. It
comes from several different parcels of old vines Gevrey Chambertin,
some of which are over 100 years old.
Fixin Clos Marion, Fougeray de Beauclair
|
This field was first consolidated and enclosed, hence the
“Clos”, by Guillaume Marion in 1828. Fougeray
de Beauclair has owned the field since 1994.
|
Although this wine is still quite young, its structure
is impressive. The aromas hint of ripe red fruits, spices
and crisp flowers. The style is hearty and well-made. It can
be aged in a good cellar easily until 2006-2010.
Vosne Romanée Les Violettes, Christian Clerget
|
This small family winery is run by Christian and his wife
Isabelle. They own 6 hectares (15 acres) with an impressive
amount of 1er crus and some grand cru. This winery works with
traditional tools and modern techniques. “Lutte raisonnée”
is also used at the Clerget’s. A short pruning, removing
leaves and green harvesting help control yields and improve
concentration. Wines are aged in oak barrels between 18 and
20 months. Wines are hand-bottled during the summer without
fining or filtering. |
 |
The “Violettes” is above all and elegant wine
(the field is located next to the wall of the Clos de Vougeot).
The vines are approximately 50 years old. The rich character
dominates, supported by direct tannins and light acidity.
It is quite aromatic, highlighting cherries, strawberries
and leather. The length is quite impressive. In a “normal”
vintage the wine can be ages 5 to 10 years but with 2002 it
can be kept easily 10 to 15 years or more.
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Clos Pitois, Roger
Belland
|
 |
Roger Belland is the fifth generation of winemaker at
Domaine Belland. The winery is made up of 23 hectares (58
acres) with a dominance of premier and grand crus in the southern
portion of the Côte de Beaune. The techniques in the
vineyards include removing shoots in the spring which controls
yields as well as allowing good aeration of the plant during
the rest of the season. They plant grass between the rows
which limits the use of chemical treatments, increases microbial
life in the soil and naturally regulates yields as well. Leaves
are removed in July to allow additional sunshine on the grapes.
Of course, the harvest is completely by hand and grapes are
strictly sorted after picking. They have a modern winery which
allows them to control temperatures during pre-fermentation
and alcoholic fermentation. Wines are aged 10 months in oak
barrels.
